Aconcagua

Mount Aconcagua 6,959m (22,841 ft) is the highest point in the Americas
and second of the 7 summits outside Mt. Everest in the Himalayas.
Aconcagua, lies entirely on the Argentinean side of the central Andes,
a natural border that divides Chile and Argentina in South America.
Considered by some companies as high altitude trekking, Aconcagua
should not be underestimated when temperatures and winds turn their
routes into a serious and dangerous peak. Many climbers have found
Aconcagua colder than Mt. McKinley in Alaska, known as the coldest
peak on earth.
Aconcagua has 3 frequent routes The Northwest route, commonly known
as the Normal route, follows the Horcones valley and is the most
crowded and possibly the easiest one, mainly because of its access
from Puente Del Inca. It takes 2 days to trek to the Plaza de Mulas
base camp, located at 4,265m (14,000ft). Beyond this very populated
base camp, there are 2 high camps from which the summit is attempted.
The Polish route goes up a different valley knows
as the Vacas valley taking 3 beautiful trekking days to make it to
Plaza Argentina, a base camp
located at 4,200m (13,944 ft). From this base camp, 2 to 4 high camps
are on the schedule prior to the summit push, then there is a traverse
to the normal route that 98% of climbers do at the foot of the glacier,
joining the normal route to the summit.
The Guanacos route also known as Quebrada Vieja
or Fondo del Valle is the most unique, less frequented, and most
gradual Aconcagua
climbing route. It also starts at the Vacas valley with
3 days trekking to
Plaza Guanacos, the lowest base camp site on Aconcagua at 3,600m
(11,808 ft), and later climbs to 4 high camps with very gentle
vertical feet ascents in between, making this route the safest, easiest,
and
most complete route on Aconcagua. The descent is through Plaza
de Mulas, the normal route.
